The original Game Boy was the first dedicated gaming appliance I ever purchased, and I have kept up that tradition dutifully.  It’s a pretty slick package, and though the software that comes with it has some features for sharpening or smoothing the graphics, etcetera, the bottom line is that is lets you play Game Boy games on your television, a la the Super Game Boy.  Any individual features are corollaries to that.  A reader asked me if the device colorized older Game Boy games like the Game Boy Color did, and I assume so, but I don’t know - I must have lost my older games in the move, which makes my heart ache.  Another reader wanted to know if it can play imports, and I can’t imagine why not, but I couldn’t tell you one way or the other.  I’ll ask Travis, I bet he’ll know.  The only questions I can actually answer are about Advance Wars 2, I’m afraid.  For example:  Is it awesome?  Yes.

I received a distraught mail from a Penny Arcade enthusiast regarding the sorry state of game releases at the moment, and while I was familiar with his emotional state, I haven’t been really seized by that in a long time - about two years, probably.  I’m playing Midtown online, some Desert Combat, Advance Wars 2, shit, what else…  Shadows of Undrentide, playing that a fair bit, still enjoying Carcassonne, I don’t have time to play all the games out now.  The only reason I’m not playing more Raven Shield is because the 1.3 patch fucked it up.  Then there’s the imminent games, games which are nigh, like Ape Escape 2, the new Armored Core, Pirates of the Caribbean - yes, for real - and I was thinking about trying to pick up Naval Ops and Elite Force 2 today.

That doesn’t even take into account the imports we got yesterday, Viewtiful Joe and Metal Slug 3, which I’d be happy to talk about more if you want.  They’re uniformly excellent.  Since we did that series on The Sucking a while ago, what I see as “doldrums” in the release schedule hardly affect me at all, because I have diversified my holdings so to speak.  Between the PC, the warring consoles, portables, and the ability to import games from anywhere in the world, I never want for stimuli.  Even if there is a dry spell this elegant stratagem cannot resolve, spelunking used bins or flipping through my CD holdy thing typically reveals games ready for the limelight.

At the risk of kick-starting another Activism Phase for Penny Arcade, I would like to link you to this interview with some RIAA fuckhead.  As president of the RIAA, Cary Sherman might even be considered the RIAA fuckhead.  Good God, the man is intolerable.  I’m not saying that because I am trying to orient myself and geekdom as his opponent, thereby granting you a simple dichotomy.  I’m saying that because he sounds like a terrified, tiny man who has absolutely no idea what he is in for.  It was their activities under Hilary Rosen that truly unleashed Peer to Peer file sharing to begin with, with a barrage of legal attacks that amounted to the most fabulous PR campaign ever.  I said at the time that if my Mom knows about Napster, then they fucked up big-time.  Let’s say these guys do start arresting people for downloading music, for having these files.  I don’t share their view that this terror will cause people to stop doing these things.  Here’s what I think it will do:  instigate a mass evolution in public digital consciousness.  Because that’s the other way it turns out - instead of people being scared, they defend themselves with new technologies designed to obfuscate their origins.  Because if regular people, my mom included, begin to understand the personal and political ramifications of encryption?  Think about it.  It’s not impossible.

I wouldn’t go as far as this guy, withdrawing my support entirely from the Hiptop as a device, but T-Mobile remotely removing the suite of games from Color Hiptops is sort of shitty.  I’m not even saying they were great games, they weren’t.  I’ve only been bored enough to access them three times since I got it.  But God dammit, at least they were there, like the last Mento, in case I needed it for some reason.

I’m one of those lucky people whose Hiptop actually does the shit it’s supposed to, I sometimes feel like I’m in the minority when I visit a site like Hiptop dot com.  But I know other people are waiting for updates that never seem to materialize, and features that hang suspended in limbo.  I don’t want to enter into a dialogue about these issues, I want them to go away.

I had gone to Planet GameCube, obviously, to see if they had a FAQ for the machine and didn’t find it.  In my defense, I looked for three seconds.

In any case, StrikerObi hooked me up.  Some good news, some bad news.

Tycho mentioned that we had received copies of Viewtiful Joe and Metal Slug 3 from VGD yesterday. Both of them are awesome and I thought I’d just talk about each one briefly.

Metal Slug 3

Arguably the best of the Metal Slug series. For those of you living under rocks Metal Slug is a side scrolling run and gun shooter. One of the cool features of Metal Slug games though are different vehicles you can jump into. Tanks, robot suits and subs are just some of the vehicles you will find yourself in command of in MS3. Visually Metal Slug 3 is a treat. Much of the slow down that plagued previous games in the series has been removed. The game also sports some of the best sprite animations around. The way zombies stumble around with there heads cocked at odd angles is really disgusting and the way they explode when you lay into them with a shot gun is truly satisfying.  Every character in this game was lovingly animated from the main characters to the giant robotic hermit crabs. It’s also an extremely import friendly game. The menus are all in English as well as Japanese so navigating them is no problem. The game itself is a straight forward action game and shooting a guy in the face is the same in Japanese as it is in English. If you were a fan of the previous Metal Slug games you can’t go wrong with 3. If you are new to the series you can’t pick a better game than 3 to start out with. I believe it’s scheduled for release in the US this fall. If you have the ability to play import PS2 games there is no reason to wait that long though.

Viewtiful Joe

Many of you probably had the opportunity to play a couple levels of this game as it was featured on the last Gamecube demo disk. If you haven’t played it yet VJ is a cell shaded 3D game with 2D side scrolling/platform game mechanics similar to Pandemonium. You play as Joe a guy who gets sucked into his favorite super hero movie and becomes a super hero himself. It’s a silly plot that is nothing more than an excuse to beat the living fuck out of bad guys in extremely cinematic ways. Joe gains the ability to speed up and slow down time which makes for some extremely cool fighting. For example after dodging an attack from an enemy you can pull the left trigger which slows down the action in a very “bullet time” sort of way. Targets then appear on all the objects and enemies around Joe that he can attack. With some very simple directional maneuvers and a few button presses you can utterly destroy all the enemies around you. When in this mode your attacks also do more damage so you don’t just punch a guy, you punch him right out of his armor and into the guys behind him who also get obliterated. You really have to play it to see how fun it is.

The ability to slow down and speed up time also comes into play when solving puzzles. A helicopter’s blades might spin slower when in slow motion meaning it can’t stay in the air. All kinds of puzzles in the game will require clever use of Joes special abilities. Speaking of which after levels Joe has the ability to spend the points he earned on new attacks, power ups, and other goodies. The descriptions for these items are all in Japanese but the names are in English. So even though I might not know what exactly the “Red Hot Kick” does, I have a pretty good idea that it’s gonna be cool. All of the games cinemas and dialogue are in English. The menu is simple and easy to figure out. The only downside is that save points are few and far between. This means you will play the same level a lot, something that might be worse if the game wasn’t so goddamned fun. Viewtiful Joe is scheduled for release in the states in October but if you have the ability to play imports on your GC you should grab it now.

The more Viewtiful Joe I play the more I think that the lack of save points is a real pain in the ass. You can play for a long time without ever getting the option to save. You can buy extra guys in the shop which helps but it would still be nice if they gave you more save points.  I just played for almost two hours and was not able to reach the next save point. I will be starting tomorrow again right at the beginning of the level I started today. I am willing to admit that I am probably just not very good at the game but I still think more saves would be nice.

Overall I still say the game is awesome.
