The CTS gets sketched hundreds of times over the course of a Comic Con, and trained so by our readers I suppose it was inevitable that he would emerge in the strip.  I might inadvertently be giving you information that you could misuse here.

I’m always surprised when I talk to someone situated in the portion of the diagram where they a) own Splinter Cell 3 but b) haven’t tried the cooperative multi.  For whatever reason, Chaos Theory actually represents three completely different games, only one of which we’re discussing today, but at the used price there are certainly worse investments.  After Pandora Tomorrow, I wondered if they would spin off the “Adversarial,” competitive multiplayer into its own thing, but I’ve never seen any numbers to suggest that this mode could actually support a community on its own.  It’s one of the most hardcore competitive experiences ever released in a retail game, even at a hard cap of four players - it can take hours to master a single level, and they’re scenarios where raw knowledge isn’t anywhere near the whole story.  It’s an inventive, interesting game that could only be produced in the current market if it were attached to something that could really move units.

I don’t think that’s true of the co-op, which could either carry an entire game itself or absorb the franchise.  We, and by we I mean true enthusiasts of the passtime, frequently lament the lack of co-operative experiences, and when they do arrive, they’re typically corralled in the FPS genre.  Splinter Cell’s co-op multiplayer uses Splinter Cell 3 as a base, but throws in a number of odd challenges in addition to its (after three iterations) refined sneaking gameplay.  The odd thing about them is that the challenges are communication challenges, not necessarily tests of arcade skill.  The game splits players up, gives them simultaneous objectives, calls on one player to direct another, tasks one player with deactivating surveillance equipment while the other passes, I mean, it’s the sort of game you would have iterated as a young person.  In the same way you might have applied a nefarious template to ordinary halls and basements, there is a level of - dare I say it - almost role-playing when you really get into it, especially when you forget that guards can hear your conversations.  It happens once, one fucking time, and you’re whispering for the better part of an hour.

The co-op missions take place in a context parallel to those of the main campaign, and even overlap for a brief period - there are four missions in total, which will last two players of moderate skill at least four hours.  The story ends, um, abruptly, but the next couple weeks will see their conclusion with two additional maps.  I haven’t seen any announcements about pricing, but after four missions I’m confident you’ll be able to make an informed decision about any potential investments.

Talking to people at San Diego, it seems like people grabbed the game largely for its single player campaign or the adversarial, when there is an entirely other game also on the platter that should, by rights, inspire an entire generation of software.  And yes, sure.  There is plenty of superspy, boy scout type stuff, but there are a number of specific, co-operative situations that have never existed anywhere else.

Well the final word from Think Geek is that the CTS prints actually sold out in just under 30 minutes. Wow.

So when we made the first print we made 300 and that obviously was not enough. So this time we made 750 and once again we underestimated you guys. The plan right now is to take the next print run up to 1000. We want to be careful though because at some point they stop being “limited”. On the other hand I want to satisfy as many of you as I can. ThinkGeek told us that at one point they were receiving more than 30 orders a second. In fact once the prints were sold out a small batch of orders still went through. I am proud to say that we were prepared for that this time.

I certainly do not enjoy reading the angry emails from people who were unable to purchase one of our prints. Honestly they aren’t even angry. It’s like when you did something bad as a kid and your Mom would say that she isn’t angry, she’s disappointed. We all know that’s even worse. These emails I got this morning are from people disappointed that they didn’t get one of the prints and I can appreciate that. Each of them has their own suggestions for how we could better handle things and some of them are right. Obviously we destroyed ThinkGeek’s servers last night and so we need to make sure that they are better prepared next time. Like I said each time we do something like this it’s a learning experience. The next print should drop around November of this year. I’m not sure what character it will be yet but we’re already devising plans to make sure a lot of these issues don’t happen again.

Thank you to everyone who stayed up late or got up early or did whatever you had to do to get a print. We certainly appreciate your support. I apologize to those of you who were not able to get one. Some of you had very real technical problems last night with the store and I’ll be contacting many of you this week with some options.

It is worth mentioning that last night wasn’t just the launch of the CTS print. A huge chunk of our new merchandise became available for purchase last night including the new Gabe and Tycho shirts. Also we will be releasing some new laser cell prints that will not be limited editions. We have a Gabe and Tycho print as well as a Fruit Fucker Prime print that should go on sale any day now. These are smaller than the CTS print but also less expensive. They still come matted and include a certificate of authenticity. However we are not placing a limit on the number of these that we’ll make.

I really enjoy drawing the CTS comics. It gives me a chance to try some different stuff and I am especially proud of the way today’s comic came out. Thank you to everyone who mailed me today with compliments on the strip. I appreciate it. I went ahead and made a wallpaper for those of you who are interested.

This year at comic con Kara and I decided to make World of Warcraft themed sketchbooks. We both got a ton of great artwork and I just happen to have my book here at the office so I figured I’d scan a couple. My book is packed with great stuff and I want to thank all the artists who took time to draw in it. Here’s just a sample of what I came away from San Diego with.

Bill Amend came by our booth and introduced himself.  I knew from reading Foxtrot that he must be a gamer. I told him about my themed sketchbook and he was happy to draw Jason as a night elf for me.

We’ve met Jhonen Vasquez a few times now at various conventions and for being a gothic icon he’s a really nice guy. It’s funny because every time he swings by our booth to chat he only has a few minutes before people around him begin to recognize him and then he is immediately mobbed by young girls dressed all in black. Our conversations are always rushed as he watches over his shoulder for the next wave of suburban vampires to assault him. Just when Tycho and I start to think that we might be sort of famous Jhonen always comes by and shows us was real fame is like. Anyway he enjoys the WOW just like everyone else and he hooked me up with this killer Warlock sketch.

I still have a very hard time realizing that I know Adam Warren. It shouldn’t be hard. I met him two years ago at Comic Con and we’ve been emailing each other on a fairly regular basis since. It still doesn’t seem real though. I used to trace his comic books for God’s sake. There was an issue of Wizard magazine that had a tutorial from him on how to draw motion lines. I used to keep it right next to my drawing table and examine it daily. Now we chat and he tells me he likes my work and it just doesn’t make a lick of fucking sense. I mean look at what this son of a bitch did in my sketchbook with a fucking sharpie. Incredible. He came back with this in less than 30 minutes and I wanted to vomit it was so good. I just wish he would get a website.

Finally we have Stephen Silver. When we did that lesson at the elementary school a little girl came up and asked me if I could draw Ron from Kim Possible. I told her I’d been accused of it in the past but I don’t think she got the joke. It’s no secret that Stephen has had probably the biggest influence on my artwork since I started cartooning. I like to think that in the past couple of years my style has become much more unique and more something of my own design but I still owe him a lot. This year I attended a sketchbook party at a hotel and ended up sitting right next to him for a while. In fact he approached me and asked how I was doing and how the show was going for us. He actually remembered who I was. I think I formed words in response but honestly I don’t remember. I was too nervous to ask for a sketch that night but the next day I stopped by his booth and got this beauty.

We were talking about this the other day, and I knew it was coming soon, but I didn’t figure on a week or so - you can find it here.

Understand that I am not telling you to install it, in fact, if you like controlling the destiny of hardware you purchased yourself, I recommend you don’t.  If you’ve been experimenting with “homebrews” this will most likely break all of that stuff.

I have no idea what else it does, but I fully vouch for the web browser it has in there.  It has a humane interface and the presentation is classy.  Our site is fully functional, and comics look brilliant on that screen.  Let me warn you again, though - who knows what is up with this thing.  I installed it on Robert’s PSP, just to give you an idea how much I trust it.

There were user-created means to apply wallpapers with earlier hacks, but for those of you checking out the new firmware it might be the first time you’ve tried them out.  I just made this one for myself, but you’re welcome to it.  I’d link the artist’s site, but last time I did that, I’m told that the rack which hosted her equipment burst into flames.

You can save it right out of the new browser, if you like.  Just remember, for your own adventures:  480x272, put it in the PHOTO folder, and hit the Set As Wallpaper menu option in the Photo menu.
