When I was writing that book for Dark Horse last week, I moved the speakers off my desk and onto Gabe’s, with disastrous results.  Yes, we only have one set.  No, I don’t remember why.  Stores do sell this kind of thing.

If I hadn’t had a bunch of other critical things to handle on Friday, I would have gone into the 360 pricing with another level of detail - touching on some of the things I’d eventually see in this transcript with J Allard.  They put together a chat to defuse some of the tensions surrounding the Xbox 400 announcement, and there is some information in there other than the deep desire, fervently expressed, to grow the market.

The dedicated enthusiast, the person who came for the transcendental experience, the “early adopter” that hooks their friends on this stuff really isn’t the point anymore.  Nobody needs those guys.  I had an article about this cooking for The Escapist that I never finished, as it relates to Nintendo.  These companies do things that seem nonsensical to us all the time, with their hundred dollar hard drives and their illusory lowball option and their non-standard controllers and their dog-petting sims.  And we get up in arms about it.  We might still bear the resentment as we preorder, because we perceive these things as betrayals.

They simply do not court us, as they once did.  It’s because this “gaming” thing that we’ve known is so great for such a long time has absolutely caught on with the larger culture, and at an alarming rate, which is why society’s immune system has responded so strongly to it.

I went to preorder my 360 almost immediately after I wrote Friday’s post!  I looked over the games they have at “launch,” determined that there’s really no guarantee when exactly those games will arrive, and then put my money down anyway.  So no, they don’t need to go out of their way.  We’re fucking insane.  Our paws are on the screen door, and we are begging to be let in.

Past catering to such a specific, peculiar subset has limited the range of simulated experiences to a tremendous degree, and so this shift is not entirely unwelcome to me.  A quick glance over other mediums which have survived transition into mainstream parlance show that crafty, inventive, sometimes independent work has far from evaporated.  In this new era, we can be the guys we hate in other contexts - the ones who got there first, the colonizers, with impeccable tastes and the dense, collected lore of the aboriginal.

If you still aren’t sure exactly what this whole PAX thing is, you should check out this interview over at Gamecloud. Our man Mike Fehlauer does a good job of explaining what the Penny Arcade expo is all about. We have five different nick names for Mike here at the office but I honestly don’t think I can repeat any of them. I promise you they are extremely clever insults that sound very similar to his real name but call into question his sexual orientation.

Just so we’re all clear, Mike is one of the two smart people that work here at Penny Arcade industries full time. He and our other friend Robert essentially handle all the advertising and business junk so that Tycho and I can focus on making comics. It’s important to mention that when it comes to PAX we actually enlisted the help of even more smart people. The amount of work required to put on an event like this is just fucking ridiculous. About the only thing Tycho and I can take credit for is the initial concept. In fact I’d say the reason the con is so successful has a lot to do with the fact that Tycho and I are not able to fuck it up. If anything I guess we deserve credit for realizing we couldn’t do this by ourselves and seeking out people we trusted to help us.

It’s hard to believe that PAX is this weekend. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. Thankfully I’ve got a couple big projects to keep me busy this week. I’m wrapping up a little two page comic that sort of sets up Myst V. I’m also drawing a five page comic based on the new Farcry Instincts game for the Xbox. I’ve still got a bunch of cards to draw for our CCG as well. Tycho wrote some really good stuff for these projects and I’m excited for you guys to see them. Here’s a little peek at what I’m doing for Myst. Some of you will hopefully recognize Sirrus and his crystalline prison world.

Just to let attendees know.  We’ll let The Videogame Pianist, Optimus Rhyme, and the NESkimos rock for as long as they like.

The battle between PA and PvP continues to rage on Dark Iron. When our guilds started on this server it was essentially brand new. Now I have about a twenty minute wait every night just to log in. Fans of both comics have absolutely swarmed the serve. We’ve had the occasional server hic up but for the most part it’s been smooth sailing. We’ve decided to try and limit the number of people we take into raids and that has seemed to help. Honestly the wait really doesn’t bother me, like I said before this PA vs PvP thing is the most fun I’ve had in WOW and I’ve been playing since the beta.

I recently moved over to the Fancy Lads guild and now hold the rank of High Fancy Pants. Tycho stepped up and took the reigns of the Knights of Arcadia. Both of these guilds have sort of put a hold on new members. However if you’re on Dark Iron and you would like to get into a PA guild you have quite a few options. Check out this thread on the Knights of Arcadia page. A very popular new PA guild is the Disciples of DivX. They apparently have a habit of getting drunk on Thunderbrew lager and starting duels outside the Lions Pride Inn.

I gotta say it’s very good to be me in this game. Every day I check my mail I have some new bit of equipment waiting for me. You can check out my gear via this page if you’re interested. I’m doing the fire mage thing if you couldn’t tell. My latest gift was the super fly hat you see me sporting there. It’s got a crazy fire bonus on it but the hat itself is green. I’d much prefer my fire gear to be red or orange or something. I’m not saying it needs flames on the side like some kind of hot rod but come on, green?
