Link painting

So I finished another painting last night. This one was the most difficult one I’ve done yet as I tried to push myself to try some new techniques. I’m going through a bit of a Mary Blair phase right now and this latest painting of Link is my sad attempt at her style.

I’m sort of obsessed with her work right now and so trying to mimic her style was a fun challenge. It’s crazy, this piece is much smaller than the other paintings I’ve done but it took me nearly three times as long. I must have painted over it four or five times. I was trying to force myself to loosen up and not rely on heavy outlines to define my shapes. I also forced myself to really think about my color choices since I consider that to be my weakest area. Like I said this was a very difficult piece for me and eventually around 12:30 last night (this morning?) I just forced myself to step back and call it done.

While I’m not super pleased with the final painting, I do think it was a successful lesson. Obviously I don’t want to start painting like Mary Blair now but there are a lot of things I can take from her work and incorporate into my own style.

I’ve already got the canvas primed for my next piece. Here’s a peek at a little part of the sketch.

My Jim Dark Magic painting should come back from the frame shop today. I’ve decided to auction it off for Child’s Play although I’m not sure if it will be an eBay auction or if I’ll save it for the live auction and dinner we do here in Seattle. I’ll make an update here once I’ve decided and I’ll post some pictures of the final framed piece.

Thanks again for all the support and tips. I’m still having a blast with this painting thing, and I hope you enjoy seeing the results.
