DLP TV ZOMG
So I’ve been looking for a while and I finally got a new television a few weeks ago. I did some research and I ended up choosing a 50” Samsung DLP HDTV. Apparently I did not do enough research though.
I’ve been playing all kinds of games on it on all my systems and I’ve been really impressed. People told me the DLP image was hot and it really is. It wasn’t until I tried to play Guitar Heroes that I noticed a problem. There seemed to be a very slight delay that made the game unplayable. I started digging around online and discovered that other people were having the same problem.
I found what appears to be a pretty complete write up about the reason for the lag. It sounds like the delay is a result of the television upscaling the signal from the PS2. I guess anytime the television has to screw with the signal to make it fit the native resolution of the set, you get lag. The same site recommends a VGA converter to solve the problem although many people seem to say that doesn’t work for them. Also my TV does not have VGA, only HDMI.
I’ve got the 360 hooked up via component and my games look and play great. The picture is damn good and overall I really do like the television. It’s just the damn PS2 that’s giving me problems. People have told me that taking the PS2 off S-Video and getting component cables for it might work but I haven’t tried that yet. That will probably be my first step. If that doesn’t’ work I’m not sure what I’ll do. I need my fucking Guitar Heroes.
Anyway I thought it was an interesting problem and it’s something I hadn’t heard about before. I figured if anyone else out there is looking at a new television this is something you should know about.
People are telling me that on my television I can change the “name” of the input for the PS2 to “game”. I had seen this in the options while I was screwing around but I assumed it was just for convenience. Apparently it actually changes the way he signal is handled and removes the upscaling. I’ll have to give that a try when I get home. Thanks guys.
