Batgirl has a transgender roommate, and writer Gail Simone doesn’t care if people don’t like it

Gail Simone will be introducing the first transgender character in mainstream comics, as Barbara Gordon (aka: Batgirl) will learn in Batgirl #19 that her roommate, who identifies as a woman, was born male. Simone gives some awesome thoughts on the subject in this piece from Laura Hudson over at Wired, and it's well worth the read.

Simone's history with DC has been a series of ups and downs; she was let go from writing for Batgirl in early December, and was brought back on a mere two weeks later after fan outcry. She's known for her fiesty attitude and willingness to "go there," which should be all the more evident with her final quote in the Wired piece. Don't like having a transgender character be Barbara Gordon's roommate? Simone doesn't give a shit. Love it.

We spoke earlier this month about how video games provided an escape and opportunity for transgender individuals to express themselves, and we're happy to see mainstream comics now doing the same. It only helps that the character is being introduced by a writer as fearless as Simone.
