The whole thing is kind of amazing, and this article does a good job of summing it up. I love that idea that the crassest commercialism actually added a deep sense of gravitas, and emotional gravity that sort of film rarely achieves.

I was in that theater, I remember feeling those things, and looking back as an adult and understanding why it was written that way doesn't change any of that. It was real to us, damnit, and that's all that matters.
