Netflix is cropping movies, and they’re not telling you about it
After reading this article I realized that I had no idea what aspect ratio Netflix uses to show movies on the service. I'm usually pretty picky about this sort of thing, but it can be hard to catch if you're not ultra-familiar with the source material, and many of us are watching films for the first time on the service.
Now I'm going to start to pay attention.
It's one thing to edit films that are being shown, but it's another to do so without telling people how you're doing it, or giving them an option to opt out. I know that some people prefer to watch movies without the black bar, and I've certainly made the effort about explaining why I feel that's wrong in the past, but at the end of the day it's your business how you enjoy movies. I just want to be told how I'm seeing a movie, how it differs from the original theatrical release, and if at all possible be given a choice to reverse that editing.
I'm curious: Were you aware this was going on?
