Perfection vs humility: the dueling strategies of Sony and Microsoft
A few months back, the popular narrative was that Microsoft was on the ropes with Xbox One. They had flubbed the reveal badly, and Sony had revealed PS4 so perfectly, that the console race was already over.
The gaming community laughed at Microsoft as they rolled back decision after decision, feature after feature. Admission of wrong-doing is never an attractive look for a major corporation, but I argued at the time that we should be celebrating Microsoft's willingness to listen to feedback and adapt.
This piece breaks down exactly why it's a good thing that Microsoft made the decision to compromise on its vision of Xbox One based on fan feedback, and how it has put Xbox One back into the console fight.
It's great that Sony has been nearly flawless with its PS4 reveal, but in the long-run I think Microsoft's willingness to listen to its fans has been just as impressive as Sony's pitch-perfect messaging.
