Robin Sachs, voice of Zaeed – and countless others – passes away at age 61
Wherever you exist on the continuum of nerd culture, you’ve probably seen or heard English actor Robin Sachs; he’s played a dark and powerful foil to Rupert Giles in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the villainous Sarris in Galaxy Quest, gave voice to more than a dozen video game characters, and much more.
You might know him best as Zaeed from Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3.
Yesterday, Sachs’ official website had a short post go live, titled, “Tragic News.” It reads:
“This is a post we never thought we would have to write…
It is with great sadness that we have to announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Robin Sachs.
Please join us in raising a glass to Robin – goodbye, dear friend. Thank you for all the laughter and the cookies. We will miss you so very much.”
Sachs brought a depth and sense of presence to even his most comical roles, and the fact that he did it almost always within films, television, and games which would have been considered “nerdy” speaks volumes. Video games – and voice-acting in them – was not always as common as it is now, and Sachs dove in head-first with the major role of Admiral Saul Karath from Knights of the Old Republic for his first gig in gaming.
Sachs often played the part of villain, and villains are at their best when you love to hate them, and hate to love them. Sachs made his baddies – and all of his characters – interesting and complex. Yesterday would have been his 62nd birthday, and he will be missed.
