Sign with a publisher or go it alone? A dev who went both ways breaks it down
There is no "right" way to develop and release a game, and in fact developers are swamped with options these days. Do you release your game into stores, or go purely digital? Do you find a publisher, or do you self-publish and finance your game? Do you charge a flat mount for your game, or does free-to-play make more sense? Kickstarter? Can you get on Steam? It goes on and on.
The author of this no-bullshit post breaks down the things you can expect from self-publishing, and from working with a publisher. His company has been on both sides of the fence, and he does a wonderful job of bringing up both the good and the bad of each approach. There's no one-size-fits-all rules here, just good information about what you can expect no matter what you choose.
