The Elder Scrolls Online will have a monthly fee, and that’s a mistake
Are you ready for another game with a monthly fee? Are you interested in any games that charge a montly fee for access? More and more online games are moving to a free-to-play mode, or they're going the Guild Wars 2 route and providing online play for free once you buy the core package. The audience for games that are $50 or so at launch, and also carry a monthly fee, may not exist anymore for games that aren't World of Warcraft.
This article does a great job of laying out all the reasons that the fee could be a mistake while taking a look at the market for online games at the moment. It's a great piece, and I find very little to argue about. Just because something is worth the price doesn't mean that people will be willing to pay it, and retrofitting a game for free-to-play always looks like an admission of failure.
There is a small chance that the game could take off with a monthly subscription charge, but I'm guessing we'll see some options open up around six months from launch.
