The step-by-step guide to indie success! (Kinda)
There is no one-size fits all solution to creating a video game, but this guide from Gunpoint's Tom Francis does a good job of walking you through what he learned through the game's creation. The advice here, especially when it comes to promotion and contacting the press, is amazing.
What's unique about Francis' story is that he went from writing about games to actually creating his own title, and he had to teach himself most of these skills during development. That sort of from-scratch experience is invaluable, and opening up the process in this way was a very giving thing to do. This may not help you if you're making a game, but I'd be surprised if you didn't learn at least a few things about the process, and in doing so were able to avoid some mistakes along the way.
Or, maybe you're just interested in getting a look into game development. This is fascinating stuff no matter what you want to get out of it, and I've been enjoying each update.
