Ubi-Art may be Ubisoft’s best, least-talked-about weapon in the search for new IP
Ubi-Art is a toolset that allows developers at Ubisoft to quickly and easily create beautiful 2D games. Rayman Origins, Legends, and Jungle Run were created using the tools, and Jungle Run proved that you can use existing assets and tweak a game's mechanics to work on mobile devices. If you haven't played it, you should go do so.
The important thing is that these tools allow designers to create smaller, more interesting games without needing a large budget, and that's going to lead to a wider selection of content in the company's stable of titles. We always talk about things that let games look better, or get bigger, but Ubisoft is betting that a tool that allows smaller, quicker games will let them experiment with new ideas without having to fund large projects.
My thoughts on this? It's a great strategy.
