It's always fascinating to read about what happens when players are left to their own devices with enough leeway to make an impact on the games they love. Sometimes the best part about a video game has nothing to do with the game's developer.

I hope that in the future we start seeing more games take a hands-off approach to the community. Give people some room to experiment and they'll find their own ways to play the developers may never have imagined. In this case, the metagame of buying and selling items in Dota 2, the value of which is hard to determine. But crafty players who know how to buy low, and sell high, can make bank.

This is an economy with no clear idea of value, so of course predatory behavior is going to thrive. Still, it's fun to hear from the people on the front lines of these situations, and in this case knowledge is, as always, power.
