What happens after the aliens are all dead and the hero is celebrating? Someone has to clean
We’re almost always the hero in the games we play. We’re the one holding the gun, jumping out the window, splashing the brains of the bad guys all over the walls of our environment. At some point, however, the people working in that office building will need that window again. It could get drafty.
Viscera Cleanup Detail is the result of a 10 day internal game jam at RuneStorm Games, and the game looks at what happens after the story of titles like Dead Space. They don’t just throw those space stations out, you know. Someone has to clean up after the monsters, make sure the walls and floor aren’t covered in blood, and pick up all those spent casings.
The video shows the game play. You clean things up. After a while your mop gets too bloody, so you have to virtually wring it out before cleaning again.
You can download the free alpha if you want to give it a try, but there isn't much there yet. Still, cleaning up the blood and gore is oddly calming and meditative. One of my favorite parts of Mario Sunshine was cleaning up with the F.L.U.D.D.. It's interesting that someone wanted to take the satisfaction of erasing grime and build an entire game around it.
Designing a game like this would also be fun. You get to write a few thoughts on how a terrible, bloody, horrific battle went down, and then figure out how the blood and bullets would be spread around the room. I imagine that this is what Dexter would play if he had a few free minutes free from not thinking about his kids.
Anyway, this is a neat idea. I can't wait until there's more to try.
