We wrapped up an old Iron Kingdoms adventure after a lull of several months, and getting around a table only stoked a fire that was already threatening the roof. It is approaching obsession levels very quickly, surprising in its ferocity. Sleep is no refuge; some unconscious process is always at work, sharpening my knives.
Our 4E version of the Iron Kingdoms setting is sort of a hacked together mess, with not-entirely-proper versions of existing classes, palette swaps, and kludges, with all the attendant cruft. At their convention, Privateer announced that they were getting back into traditional roleplaying games, which would brush all that nasty stuff away. That's really what I want. If I can use a bunch of my existing models for an entirely other game - similar to what happened with Dominion in League of Legends - then I will consent, however briefly, to something like joy.
So yeah, it was a mess, and therefore messy, but: also marvelous, in its way. The party is such a fun mix of deconstructed archetypes that you harvest awesome Seven Samurai moments several times a night. The whole affair has that sweet/savory Sloppy Joe quality that makes it delicious, if not elegant; paper towels are virtually a requirement.
