Dear Readers

Thank you for calling Gabe on that, as it saved me having to do it. He's out of control. Waiter! More wine!

But you said you liked the Japanese version!

By Gabe – October 7, 2002

People are asking me why I liked the Import version of KH and not the US version. The Land of the Rising Fun is about my impressions of a game. Sometimes the games I get are so jam packed with Japanese that all I'm able to offer are my impressions of it because I either have no clue what's going on or I can't get very far. Other times the games are almost entirely in English and I can give a more detailed review, like in the case of Tekken 4 or KOF 2000. What I saw of KH in the import version was pretty cool. The graphics are great and the combat starts out being pretty fun. I honestly didn't play enough of it to get to the bad stuff. So yes, my initial impressions of KH were that it was going to be a great game. Needless to say I was pretty fucking disappointed. If I make a mistake I am the first person to come out and admit it. I was way off base with my initial thoughts on KH.

I'm going to fucking edify you whether you like it or not. These aren't particularly game-related.

The Key Blade can kiss my ass.

By Gabe – October 7, 2002

Yes it's true, I think Kingdom Hearts is complete shit. I purchased it because Kara is a big Disney fan and I was hoping it would be something we could play together. Early in the game Kara got frustrated with the jumping and passed the controller off to me. At first I tried to enjoy it, but that just wasn't going to happen. So then I looked at it like a job. I knew it wasn't going to be fun but I had to finish this game. That lasted for about five or six hours. Eventually it was everything I could do not to break the game in half and throw it in the garbage.

Everyone Else Seems To Like It

By Tycho – October 7, 2002

Perhaps Lord Gabriel will grace us with an audience later today, and detail for us why he has broken ranks on the critical Kingdom Hearts issue. Don't ask me though, because I don't know. He might have said why at some point, but he doesn't really enunciate. Half the time he talks it sounds like he's chewing on a superball.

P.A.I.N.T

By Gabe – October 4, 2002

Penny Arcade enthusiast Neil contacted me recently and informed me of a little program he made. It's called P.A.I.N.T which stands for Penny Arcade Internet Notification Tool. It's a little program that sits in your tray and alerts you when Penny Arcade gets updated. Since Tycho and I have been making more posts recently and at strange times it seemed like a cool idea. Anyway Neil needs your help. He needs someone who can design some icons for the program. Neil says "they should be 16x16 icons in 256 colors, something instantly recognizable as penny-arcade without squinting." If this sounds like something you can do you can e-mail him at paint@neilogic.com

Star Wars!

By Gabe – October 4, 2002

I am just about half way through Destiny's Way, the latest book in the New Jedi Order series. If you're a Star Wars fan you really owe it to yourself to read this series. I've talked about it a lot in the past so I'm not going to harp on it too much. Each time I mention it though I get mail weeks later from people thanking me for introducing them to these books.

When I said "the guys at the rein" before, that was not a reference to Mark Rein. Jesus.

Bullshit

By Tycho – October 2, 2002

Yeah, he neglected to mention that he sends me pictures from that thing all the time, presumably to remind me that I don't have one - "This is me at Nintendo, having fun. This is me at a stoplight, my ringtones are the best." I haven't said anything about it recently, because I can't think of a way to write it that doesn't sound like I'm giving Danger a blowjob.

The Reality

By Tycho – October 2, 2002

The problem with games isn't that they cost too much. I'm not an economist or anything, but I'm willing to bet that regular old, non-collector games cost more or less what they used to in real dollars. What's more, the technically savvy have been getting games for free as long as there have been games, and this will only get worse as prices go up. No, I'm afraid we won't be joining this boycott, or any other boycott, or signing any petitions, or wearing a silly suit and walking back and forth, or any of that shit. Activities like this will only anger our corporate overlords, causing them to activate dormant volcanoes in our midst and bury us in molten rock. So if you're into magma or whatever, you know, hey.
